Chicken pox is a viral infection most often seen in children. It is more common in the spring and fall and usually lasts 7-10 days. It is very contagious, although it is unusual for individuals who have had it already to get it again. Excessive scratching of the rash and blisters caused by chicken pox can result in infection and scarring. Chicken pox can be serious, so it is important that all children age one and over be immunized against it.

Symptoms include:

  • Rash
  • Fluid filled blisters
  • Itching
  • Fever and headache
  • Decreased appetite

Treatment:

  • Calamine lotion may relieve itching.
  • Children’s acetaminophen to control fever (use dosage as recommended by a doctor).
  • Lots of fluids to prevent dehydration.

Contact your health care provider for additional information about the chicken pox vaccine or if your child develops chicken pox symptoms or experiences infection from scratching.
