Perhaps the most important information about a cold is how to prevent it.

To prevent a cold, children and adults should:

  • Wipe their noses using disposable towels
  • Cover their mouths when they cough
  • Wash their hands frequently
  • Not eat or drink after others

Symptoms include:

  • Runny nose
  • Stuffy nose
  • Low grade fever
  • Cough
  • Sore throat

 

  • Sneezing
  • Itchy and watery eyes
  • Chills
  • Fussiness
  • Poor appetite

Treatment:

If temperature is normal:

  • Keep child warm
  • Give fluids
  • Humidify air
  • Raise the heads of infants and clear their noses using a bulb syringe and salt water drops

 

When temperature is above normal:

  • Call your health care provider for dosage of children’s acetaminophen
  • If a cough develops in an infant under 4 months old, call your health care provider right away
