Colic usually begins when babies are 2-3 days to three weeks old and may last until the baby is 3-6 months old. Symptoms of colic usually occur at the same time each day. The cause of colic is unknown, but affected infants are considered healthy.

Symptoms include:

  • Abnormal swelling or bloating of the baby’s abdomen
  • Crying spells during which the baby’s legs are drawn toward abdomen

Treatment:

  • Hold baby upright when feeding
  • Burp baby frequently
  • Wrap child in a blanket (swaddling)
  • Give baby a warm bath
  • Nurse the baby
  • Rock baby
  • Try exposing baby to music and other sounds
