Exposure to lead is very dangerous for infants and young children. It can cause lead poisoning which can slow development and result in learning and behavior problems. Lead poisoning can also cause permanent damage to a child’s organs.

Lead can be found in:

  • Paint. If your house was built and painted prior to 1978, have your paint tested for lead. Even if you have repainted since 1978, check for lead: New paint can chip causing possible exposure of the original paint.
  • Old water pipes which may be made of lead.
  • Some types of handmade pottery.

To reduce exposure to lead:

  • Clean up chipping paint around your home or daycare center.
  • Have your home checked for lead paint.
  • If you live in an older home, run the water for a few minutes before using it for drinking or cooking.
  • Wash hands often, especially before eating.
  • Frequently wash children’s toys.
